Steampunk Costuming

There is nothing like the thrill of walking down the street in neo-victorian clothing
with the only thing to protect you is a steam powered portable analytical engine
sitting in your breast pocket (or so i would imagine if I had one).

Not!
Although I've never done it myself I always like the things your 'league' comes up with!
Where do you keep the boiler for your steam-powered analytical machine?
I like things with dials and knobs, they're just so much more reliable than buttons and touch screens.

Lately it seems every time I turn on the TV I see the music video for The Smashing Pumpkins' Tonight, Tonight which is heavily inspired by George Meilies and is just beautiful.

An LJer mentioned afilm that's been made in NZ and is more steampunk that straight horror - not that you'd guess it by the marketing. http://www.perfect-creature.com/ I can't wait for it to get released here (fingers crossed it does), and feel like I should have a steampunky ensemble to wear to it. I just haven't defined my vision for it yet.
Yes my bellydance teacher told me that I think too much!

I just love the mixture of victorian elegance with futuristic punk to create an outfit that is just unique. I'm thinking of adding it into my daily wardrobe along with the 40's/50's gear.

There are many things that I could be proud of
If only I'd invented them, such as the wheel
The washing machine and the tumble dryer
On these inventions surely I could retire

One of the girls there described her usual steampunk-esque work outfit - victorian blouse and black jeans - wanting to know how to steampunk it up. The simplicity of the outfit really grabbed me, and I could totally imagine it in my head!
Cream/ivory chiffon and lace short sleeved blouse, black pants (jeans, cargo pants etc), a nice wasitcoat with a pocket watch, maybe a piece of steampunk jewellery, a pair of yummy buckled boots.
So that's what is currently inspiring me!! And then I remembered that I had a beautiful button front blouse pattern with all the frills and lace! In addition to a HUGE stash of different coloured chiffons. All I need is the pants and waistcoat.
I'm actually really inspired and really excited!!

I did see in a shop on Wyatt st in Adelaide that had an original key windup pocket watch that displayed all the interior clockwork working via a glass front. OMIGOD is was so steampunk I was looking to see if there was matching brass goggles sitting next to it. Unfortunately it was priced right outsde of my range (so I will hunt down a chinese replica version which Im sure is already on ebay somewhere).
Hmmm I wonder if could get a used Zepplin on ebay....

Came across this link on another costume group,
http://www.christineu.com/dw_practice/steam.html
Seems these folks are developing a steam punk inspired game, as the pictures were taken at a Game Developers Conference. Mostly men, but a couple of ladies as well. Nice bustle and corset combo too.
PS Just uploaded a great photo of 2 of the girls from another site, put it in Lady Janes photos in the Members Galleries because I couldn't get it onto this post !
Enjoy,
Christine.

I'm very much thinking of making something Steampunk based for the Friday night of Sydnova and I think Last_Chael is leaning that way too. So we were thinking that if anyone was interested, we could do an actual Steampunk group on the Friday.
Thoughts? Interest? Lynch Mob?

You know I'd be up for this. But it would require me to give up the Friday night costume I had planned...
