Lately MS and I have been thinking about making a green screen. We've found a need to crop pictures we've taken quite a bit lately. MS is the one with the photoshop skills, not me, and its a real pain to crop a person out of a mixed background. So we thought it would be easier to make a green screen so that MS can easily select the background and copy the person out of the image and into a new one.

Today at the Tea Tree Gully Library, the guys from the United Federation of Planets were there with their green screen and since it seems fairly straightforward, I'm thinking about using a similar method. They had it at the ball this year....

I was told that it was made using 112cm wide LIME poplin, sewn to block out fabric. I thought about making mine double the width (to accommodate lightsabers)

Does anyone have any experience making one???

The only comment I was going to make was that theirs isn't wide enough, so I agree with making it wider, especially for group shots smile.gif

I've done photography backdrops before, and my only tip would be make sure not to have a seam. So the wider the fabric you can get, the better. Seams cause shadowing, which can make life annoying!

I'm pretty sure the boys are working on a much bigger one now.

Bigger would definitely be better.Ideally you want it far enough away from the people that you can get front lighting onto the green screen to even out its colour as much as possible(while allowing the people to be lit however you want).

Possibly make it so it's a fixed height(tall enough for people) and can be unrolled to whatever width you need?

I'll try to see what's out there in terms of the wider fabric, but the shade of green the UFP used was really good. So even though it's not really wide, if I can make a seam work out and not stand out, I want to give it a try.

all the professional ones I've seen for sale seem to be a maximum of 12foot by 9foot with no seam - it would be interesting to see how they do the bigger ones in the Movies

Many of the screens in film aren't fabric, they're big *plywood?* sheets.

Yeah, they usually use green painted backgrounds. There are places where you can buy the proper chromakey paint (as well as the fabric backgrounds) but it's rather expensive.
