I'm wondering whether anyone knows how to successfully capture a still (eg. character in costume) and convert that into a jpg for visual referencing, particularly when obtaining a pattern is impossible.

The best program I've found for doing screengrabs is PowerDVD. It enables you to pause where you want and grab, and it saves it automatically! Some versions let you move frame by frame!

I use the same thing. Very very handy!
