I wanted a really nice quality garment bag for my victorian dress and petticoats, so I went looking for one too. I found that they were all pretty shoddy quality, and none of them were even long enough or wide enough for a normal dress let alone one as long as my victorian. I went and bought a $1 one from my local junk store (Bargain City) and used it as a template for making my own. I made mine out of a ripstop nylon that you would normally use for boardshorts. It's washable, and it stands out a mile away as being mine..

nice idea... Thanks.

It's always surprising to find out how hard it is to find a supposedly common items.

I couldn't find decent ones either, so I made my own, using a commercial pattern I already had. It would be cheaper to buy a cheap cover and use it as a pattern.

I used cotton gingham for some of mine, and added pockets for accessories. So my Edna Mode costume as a pocket for her glasses and a pocket in the side gusset for her riding crop. And I made it black & white, with red to match. My Loli garment bag used a remnant of hearts printed fabric that I'd bought for something else but never got around to making. My bellydance costume (where I dance as in a male's role) has a big pocket on the back for my belly padding.

Making them yourself means you can get them the right length for the costume, and with any pockets you need for accessories. Or am I coming across as a bit obsessive?

It's never even occurred to me to make them myself, lol! I may have to try that - I hate having to fold costumes over because the bags are too short.

Wenz, that's exactly what I'd been intending to do! Most of my costumes have accessories that always seem to get separated when I pack them all up. Plus I have rather long costumes and ones that have pieces that done hang (like corsets). I'm also thinking of making a few boxes to house things like corsets and vintage gloves as my collection expands.

Sadly at the moment all my costumes are folded up in plastic tubs!

We found some at Howards Storage World - you can get the clear plastic ones, or beige material ones (not sure what type of material).
The material ones come in a pack of 3 - one long and 2 short.
Still not long enough for a floor-length gown, but better than some.
