I didn't think this fitted into the historical section because it was a TV show.

I just wanted to share some pictures of the hat I made for a friend to wear out to a costume party during Popefest in Sydney.

I blocked a felt scull cap and fixed it with PVA glue, then covered it with lycra. I wasn't happy with the little puckers around the forehead but it was a freebie so I wasn't redoing it *hee hee*. Then I made the cone and support bit from felt and a really thick fusing on one side and wired it around the edge. Then covered them in material and put them on the scull cap. Then the wings were fused felt with wire around the edge and covered with material. I used a layer of wadding under the material on the top sides of the wings and cone so you couldn't see the wire around the edge through the fabric.

So yeah. It took a couple of days worth of cursing and trying to remember the tricks my teacher taught us at school. If I was doing it again I would take much more care with the finishing of the edges of the cone because I used big fat in a hurry stitches instead of dainty little small invisible stitches.

Hope the links work!
