Just wondering if anyone on here has any experience making pancake tutus? (really stiff, straight out from hip style)...I want to adapt it for a design Im working on for fashion week next year but cant find any useful info on google and rather than destroy metres of fabric trying to nut it out meyself, I thought i'd be smart and ask first smile.gif

I only have my straight stitch machine & sadly without my gathering foot atm.....way to add to the challenge I guess!!

But anyways, if anyone has any little pieces of info that might help...or even websites that I can look up myself it would be a massive help!!! blush.gif

I found this place. It has them ina kit form, they also explain the different tyes of tutu's. The one your wanting to make sounds like the Russian one,
http://www.tutu.com/kits_tutuclass.html

The 'Russian' ('pancake', 'platter') style is the very-flat, stand-out style most typically associated with tutus in 'modern' times. This tutu has a metal hoop hidden inside the layers of net to help provide the flat-look and stiffness.

The 'Classic' or 'English' style is similar to the 'Russian' style, but is not hooped. It has a softer, 'more-feminine' look than the 'Russian' style.
The 'Bell-Shaped' style has much more 'droop' and 'flounce' than either the 'Russian' or 'Classic' styles. The tutu-skirt is built with longer layers of net, includes layers of soft tulle, and is never hooped.

From my years practicing Ballet, I believe that the Russian tutu's are pleated onto the basque/foundation not gathered. The layers are also sewn together using a small running stitch. The wire hoop is really fine and not heavy and sit about 10 cm from the edge of the skirt.

The Romantic tutu's (the mid-calf length) are made from strips of tulle, as is they are narrow strips sewn in layers to create that very soft look.
