I know that quite a few people will have already made pirate costumes, but I couldn't find a thread specifically on pirate costumes, so I thought I'd make one!

My friend is having a themed birthday party - Pirates, ninjas and robots! So of course I'm going as a pirate! The other helpful thing is that a while ago I created a pirate character named Blaize, and while I had ideas for her outfit, I never got around to drawing more than a headshot and her shirt. So I'm thinking it's time to pull Blaize outta storage and finish her for the party tongue.gif

The main idea I've always had for my pirate costume is something more along the lines of 'I'm a pirate Cap'n, don't mess with me!' rather than a more pirate wench sort of look. At the same time, I don't just want to be a chick dressed as Cap'n Jack tongue.gif So here are my general thoughts, I'd love to hear people's suggestions!

The shirt I'm thinking of is collared, with a lace up bit at the front, loose sleeves, but not gathered at the wrist. I have this pattern (http://store.sewingt...I=10013&page=10) I was thinking of using the bodice, but making it longer so it's more waistcoatish. So it will still keep the fitted laced-up almost corset-like look, but be more pirate than wench (If that makes sense tongue.gif). I'll be wearing pants, tucked into my boots (I'm jsut going to wear my Jedi boots for this) and probably a scarf as a belt. For the jacket, I love Jack's pirate jacket, so I'll probably go for something in a similar style.

Sorry if this post is long tongue.gif I'll try and sketch out some ideas and post them up too. Thanks!

That sounds like it will be a lot of fun. We went a bit pirate crazy at the start of the year. lol

Have you seen the new pics from POTC 2? Elizabeth wears a rather manly pirate outfit for some of it, and it looks cool smile.gif

Ooooh thank you very much! I had seen bits and pieces of her costume, but I had never had a good look. That's actually quite similar to how I imagined my costume. Though hers seems too military and gentlemanly. I think if I can get somewhere between hers and Jack's (his is more lived in and quirky tongue.gif) I will be happy! But there's some great ideas there, thank you!

The Sydney pirates event in May '07 gives me plenty of time to procrastinate over my costume. I'm tempted to go generic, rather than as Elizabeth or Jack.

One of my good friends had a great idea for a costume party - go with a pirate as his treasure chest (as I have the "assets"). Just decorate the area with lots of bling and a period costume. So I might go for this as it's less of a pressure for my perfectionist streak.

There's also a gorgeous pink/green brocade at the fabric shop near my work that really reminds me of one of the men's jackets in the Kyoto Costume Institute book.

First thing I'm going to try is the georgian stays in one of Hunnisett's books. If that's close enough to fitting and not too traumatic to make, then I'll go all girly, otherwise, I can see a pirate on the horizon.

I really love Elizabeth's pirate outfit. It's so tempting to make it!

I couldn't help noticing NSW having an outing for the new movie next year, and I was curious, are we QLD guys donning our pirate hats once more organising a raid on the Regent next year?

Oooh most definately! I need to fix up and finish my Elizabeth Pirate outfit - finish jacket trims, and perhaps put in the box pleats at the back; completely remake the waistcoat; completely remake the shirt; make a pair of pants; fix up the boots; get a pirate hat (I want to weather one, so I don't want to destroy yours Morgs); oh and follow the tutorial on RPF to make my toy compass more accurate. *gasp* yes alot to do, but I'm still so proud of my jacket, it's the most accurate thing I think I've ever made biggrin.gif (Or will be once I finish the trims).

Oh and the good thing is my hair will be long enough by then to do Elizabeth properly. I think this time instead of doing the curly hair out Liz, I'll do the 'looking like a boy' Liz and bind my hair with leather cording. I just have to fix up my shirt pattern, and find better fabrics for the waistcoat. biggrin.gif

Oh I almost forgot! I do still need to fix up the belt/sword scabbard holder thingy. Silver Moonblaze, if you're going to do the pirate costume, check out The costumer's Guide website. I made mine before the movie came out, just using the shots that she had there, they were sooo useful! Also if you can, try and get a hold of the figure. I bought mine just before the movie came out, and found it very helpful, it's got great detailing!!

Woot!

I'm not sure the pirate hats I have would take too well to weathering anyhow Abi - I definately have to get on to making my own Pirate outfit... I was muchly displeased with my makeshift efforts of this year... I'll have to get my Pirate jacket out and washed (Brother sprayed it with bug spray x___x ), but I'd like to make another to the design I had originally... but if I run out of time, the one I have is as near enough as makes no difference wink.gif

CG is good... I stayed up late saving pictures from there last night x___x

So today I was sketching ideas for my PotC3 premiere costume. This is what I came up with:

SKIRTS: I have a bolt of navy linen lying around that will do the second skirt. I haven't yet decided if I'll make the bottom skirt a full colour or if I'll make a skirt of something else cheaper and attach a band of colour or a ruffle in the red or whatever I choose. I'd really like the idea of a striped overskirt but that all depends on finding some appropriate (and affordable) fabric. And it will have ribbon ties to bustle it up off the ground and show off the petticoats. I'm also considering bloomers for that bit extra fullness.

TOP: I will cheat and elasticate the neckline and possibly the sleeves. Thinnish cotton should do it, I want something flimsy and kind of gauzy, but opaque enough you can't see a bra and/ or nipples through it (which is why my last pirate costume could not be worn without a vest). I might still put a drawstring through the neckline though, with a bow or something at the front.

VEST: I was thinking brown or black, although I could probably use some of the navy linen like the skirt *ponders* It will be lightly boned. I was originally thinking of the lacing at the front, but having a flat front gives better tummy control and backlacing makes it much easier to get an inch or two's reduction out of it (going to change it to spiral lacing btw). However, I think the front looks a little plain without it. I'm considering putting a busk in to again give tummy control and to help get it on and off, and then hiding it with buttons or frog closures.

Thoughts, anyone? LJ post is here if you prefer that medium: http://faerie-mistress.livejournal.com/313278.html

I bought 7 or so meters of what I thought was white cotton that was not see through. I washeded it to make my bustle petticoat and after seemed thin. It is not quite see thru but it is not opaque. If you you wanted to use that you are most welcome to!!!

Cheers Rebecca, I might have to take you up on that. I'll go through my own horde first though. I know I have some white cotton bought for a chemise and never used but I think that might be too thick. And I have leftover voile from medieval veils but that's what I made last years puffy pirate shirt of GAY out of, which as I said had some problems with transparancy... *L* I should only need a metre to a metre and a half I think.

This was last year's costume. Keep in mind I had about a day and a half's notice to cobble it together.

eek, only 3 weeks to go and not even an attempt at stays by me. MUST DO this this weekend.

I have white cotton voile in stash. I have brown/blue brocade in stash for top layer of stays - if I'm a slapper what does it matter if I wear my underwear as outerwear. I'm tempted to use blue corduroy for the skirt - I have some in stash and so don't have to spend money - which I'd rather spend on plastic boning (thinner than cable ties and thus less bulk on my well padded self.

hmm must get onto it v v soon, like saturday!
