Toy Guns

I want to do a Jill Valentine cosplay....but I've NO idea where to get a pair of toy guns/pistols. Any suggestions? It seems that all of the plastic toys like that are no longer available in stores...Toys R Us...not even the Reject Shop or Cheap as Chips have them anymore...and my google searches fail LOL...
Also, does anyone know what the restrictions are for toy guns in public?
Thanks

There's no hard and fast rule with toy guns in public. Essentially the law states that anything that appears, or is used in a threatening way, is bad. Ergo if you wave around a toy gun in Rundle mall you're stuffed. If you are in a closed-door Convention and use it only for photos, depending on the Convention rules you should be okay.
The guns that character uses look at a glance to be Beretta M92's. I've haven't seen Berettas as a life-size toy since the 1990s. However some of your Play Station Light guns are based on Berettas and I know of a couple of people who have found the Play Station guns at garage sales or on ebay and given them a coat of paint and used them for costuming.

There's a place at the Brickworks that sell toy pellet guns for real cheap! These are legal apparently because I think they are spring propulsion and not air and therefore fire at a slower speed (I can't remember the speed that makes it illegal but you can ask the folk behind the counter there). From what I remember they look pretty cool and are NOT brightly coloured. Last I saw they were renovating their mini firing range for the 'less legal' air guns. I can't quite describe where this stall is located so you might have to have a bit of a search!
Also, I've just begun making resin props. They look okaaaaay. I have a silicone mould for a Walther PPK (old school James Bond's choice in gun).
But like Merrick mentions you're probably after something more like a beretta
Just remembering that Game Traders Marion had a couple of old console guns for the Super NES (?) that might be what you're after. Roughly $20-$30 each I think if they are still there.

I used to sell something similar in my shop. Probably about the same size...the label just said "police gun" .
My supplier has been out of stock, I'll check with them again next week and let you know if they can still get them in.

I don't know about other states, but the Collectors Armoury in Mudgeeraba on the Gold Coast is still selling Replicas. I find it stupid we're allowed to purchase them without a licence though, it gives us hope. That's if you're willing to shell out $100-200-300 for one, and you don't cross the border without a licence.

I have been considering it, but it's just too much for me to spend right now.
I don't know what you stumbled on, Trenchy, but it sounds damn good. I've got an old PS1 NAMCO GCON http://www.memm.de/gameselect/pics/lg-gcon.jpg Light Gun with the cord chopped off, but it's too big to do me any justice right now, perhaps I could pass it on to someone.
It is an Anime-Inspired kinda pistol, despite its unrealistic bulk.
I just watched Rush tonight and I want a bloody Glock 17.
A trade maybe? Glock doesn't have to be great.

I'm not sure what they were actually but they did resemble a Walther PPK but slightly chunkier. It doesn't matter anyway because they disappeared a few days after I posted that comment.
*GASP* I'm so there!!!!

The Skorpion SMG looks pretty alright, it's got a folding stock too. Spraypaint it and it should look better.
Anyone used it before?

Unfortunately they're airsoft weapons which are considered to be firearms so they can't be imported legally. In countries where they are legal they're the main type of costuming gun due to their accurate appearance and size and are used in TV shows when real guns aren't required on set.
Here we have to make do with modified toys and scratch builds mostly.

I e-mailed them this to test their knowledge:
I live in Regional Queensland and have visited your site quite a few times, even had a catalogue sent. I am definately interested in buying one of your Replica Firearms, however I do have a few concerns.
Firstly, gun politics in Australia is a very serious issue... Now, I'm sure you're all aware of the current laws... Appologies for even mentioning that. But because of this, I'm worried of product confiscation or a fine due to the great deal of money involved. I'm not sure of the methods involed in the delivery make it safe, but you wouldn't have business otherwise.
Also, I do not currently hold any firearms licences... Is this a problem?
And I recieved this reply...
Kind regards
Collectors Armoury
Unless they know something we don't know, these guys have their facts all wrong. I'm rather dissapointed, but will still visit their showroom in Mudgeeraba if I get the chance.

New here but I am seeking anything in relation to modern style replicas for short films. I do hold a current firearms licence and have the money required to purchase these (willing to pay around $400 each depending on quality). I am after mainly pistols, rifles (M4's, AK's, P90's etc) and a shotgun
I thought about just going straight over to the police station and inquiring about what I need to do to get these so if I have any luck I will post it here
Kind Regards,
New Guy

Most of use these days get ours from toy shops or ebay and then paint them up so their a little more accurate. You just have to be patient, sometimes it takes years for suitable ones to become available.
That being said, a lot more water pistols and bright green toys are based on real ones, so a coat of paint does wonders.
