I have an Idea that I want to do.
I am in the middle of working out an Idea for a costume from my own imagination. But I have no idea on how to get the look I want.

basically the costume is from my book The Kahaley Knights.
The knights are a group of individuals that have the ability to control time by thourght. As well as being martial art experts. Their attitudes are very close to the Drs from mash in there way of dealing with what they do.
I have the beginnings of a wooden practice sward.

But the look I want to get is a comically organized mish mash of time periods from Arthurian times to the distant future. as well as a dose of fantasy.
any suggestion would be great.

I have done a very very quick sketch of the start of the costume for the Court.
Any ideas and thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Hello Alex,

I noticed noone has replied as yet. Perhaps a bit more of a description of what articles you need would help as it is hard to tell from the photo.

I can see what look like a pair of jeans, a green shirt, and a cape. If you need a pattern for a cape try mcCalls or Butterick (you know the pattern books in places like spotlight) and look through the costume section for a nice looking cape that looks like the fit you want. Possibly a Gandalf pattern or something like that.

Jeans and a green shirt you may be able to buy and slightly alter if you need to. Otherwise you can probably get patterns that would suit these as well when you're looking for your cape pattern.

I don't know what else you are needing for the costume you're doing. I haven't read the book sorry.

The drawing is more of a starting point then a final resolt.
You guys have more of an idea on how to use verious merterials to get an over all effect then I would.

So as you can see. It's more of what could look like the part then anything else.

As for the book It's not finished.

Hi Alex,

It sounds to me a bit more like you're still in the design stage, rather than having the picture of what you want and being ready to make it.

My understanding is that your characters are time-travellers? and you want the costume to show this by having different bits of the outfit being from different eras, from the past through to the future, yes?

OK, one way to approach this is to think of the character you wish to portray. I'm assuming this is his everyday clothing, and most people wear a particular piece of clothing because a] it's comfortable, or b] they think they look good in it. Oh, and in this case c] because it's what they are familiar with (eg. jeans for the 20th century).

Now taking jeans as the example - they're a good place to start your costume because they're easy to get (you've probably got some already, right smile.gif ) and they have been worn (by men) for quite a number of decades. The down side of them is because they are something that a lot of people today wear anyway, some people may think you're not really wearing a costume, or only half a costume. sad.gif

So it might help to think more about a particular character from the book....

- Which time and place was he born? (eg, 13thC Germany, 15thC China, 20thC American, 23rdC somewhere-not-earth?) . This will give you a basis for his clothing.

- What does he do in the book? You call them knights - do they fight? Is it organised? Do they have time to get changed into specific fighting gear, or is fighting part of their usual activity/lifestyle? If fighting is a usual activity, then I would think you'd need clothing that wasn't too loose, or would impede you in a fight.

- What is his personality - is he a suave and sophisticated James Bond type or more an Indiana Jones sort of guy? Is he serious or whimsical, studious or a bit of joker? These will all reflect in his clothes.

- Where/when does he travel is this book? This will also give you a clue as to the sort of clothing he might be wearing. Eg. if he rips his shirt fighting, he's going to get a replacement from whatever time/place he is at the time, or maybe he picked something up while he was there because it caught his eye (been there, got the t-shirt wink.gif )

Maybe if you can give us some more specific detail on the character you want to portray, we can make some suggestions on how to dress him laugh.gif

Hope that helps.

It realy does help alot because I had no idea even where to go in the planning.

Madam prez your sugestion of "got the tea shert" is a realy good idea. Because he carry's a sward. A customised 15th cantery english scarbbord would look good around a technaolagy advanced sammuri sward.

The head from lion suit will be part of the finished product. As the main chartor in the book is a leo (half lion half man).
so he will have to have a cloke or descise.

He has travelld to Artherian England. Obseved verious moden wars. Visted many other time perods.

I'm not familiar with the characters, but fancy the idea of jeans in a brocade fabric. Robust jacquard or brocade, that is. 20th century clothing in a fabric more commonly used for clothing in the past.

Though it would add to your work, cos then you'd need to make the jeans as well. sorry i wasn't more helpful.
