Time to start a thread on this I think. Love it or hate it, SGU certainly has a different 'flavour' to the other SG series'. A little more serious, darker and with some awesome/awful camera work I really enjoy this show. So as such it's time to make a costume.

The majority of general air force personnel wear a specific type of black uniform, not as colourful or 'spacey' as the SGA uniforms, but a little less unisex and combat-like of the SG-1 uniform.
Here's a pic of the male uniform anyway.

Here's a pic of the female uniform

Both jackets are actually modifications of the Atlantis season 4/5 jackets. The ridiculous centre pleat from the back of the Atlantis jackets is gone, the back of Tamara's jacket is totally plain. I don't have a pic of the back at the moment but there's a few times you can see the back in some of the episodes. The fabric has reverted back to black ripstop as was used throughout SG-1.
If you zoom in you can see the telltale squares.
This pic shows how the pattern is the same, even down to the decorative topstitching on the front seams. (Apologies on the size of the pic.)

I'm part way through sewing this jacket using Simplicity pattern 3628 as suggested by Mozzie and Starfire Phoenix for the female SGA jackets. Fortunately ripstop in black is now available at Spotlight after an absence of some time. The only changes I've identified are the pocket flaps on the front, which I suspect are false pockets, the epaulets, and the pocket on the sleeve. Fortunately Tamara's uniform is plain on the back, so there's no further modification required there.

The men's jackets on the other hand, although doing away with the centre pleat, now have bifold pleats at the shoulders, just like the WEP style from SG-1 as can be seen here...

Not quite sure how I'll tackle that when I decide to do a male uniform.

I have been working on these (and have ordered the patches.. awaiting them to turn up) Could not find a patch for the front chest logo though. Do you know where to get one?
Bugga! I have been adapting another pattern!
Ripstop? I have not used this ever? I will have to get to SPotlight. Do you know how much it is?
Can't get there today.... sigh...
Am hoping to get this done for the Quizz night, but I have a fallback plan....

Hi Kat,

Spotlight calls it 'Ribstop' - I think that's just an English translation problem between the Asian sweatshop where the fabric is made and the suppliers. It's definitely supposed to be called 'Ripstop' because the little squares do exactly that - stop the fabric from ripping. Anyway the ribstop from Spotlight is definitely what you are after, costs around $11 p/m.

The patch on the front above the pocket is the Airforce 'command patch' which depending on it's design tells other personnel, which department the officer works in, and how long they've worked in that area. ( 1-3 years, 3-7, or 7 + years) All patches are available from Dan Kim, the guy who runs www.scifihero.net Head over to that website and PM 'lostncyber' (that's his screen name) and he can source the whole set of badges and patches including the nametapes.

And something else I discovered is that the press studs are actually BLACK. Because of the tremendous amount of stage lighting required to light up the dark uniforms and the dark sets, the light reflects off of the black press studs really badly making them appear silver.

thanks.. I was going to get the ribstop... phew.
D is getting onto the chest patches, as we speak. We had worked out they were airforce command but could not find them on the net. We got the other patches from scifigeeks.com. They did not have the airforce command ones that we wanted. He has had to sign up first. Hopefully they will all turn up in time to finish off the outfits.
Off to spotlight tomorrow (or Sat if that doesn't work out)...
Thanks. I have been hunting and hunting for the material and had no idea what it was called!
I have one pic from the show that I thought the studs were black.. thanks for confirming it!

ACK! After rewatching episode #8 I notice that Tamara's jacket has the bifold-pleat at the shoulders, yet in a previous episode, it looks completely flat/normal. So is there more than one type of jacket? Possibly, although unlikely, it's more likely that I haven't been able to see it properly. Gads, do I contue with the one I've got, given its about 4/5 done, or should I start afresh? Is screen accuracy that important to me? Not really, I guess so long as the front is pretty much spot on, that's enough for me.

Haha I'm still debating whether or not to go the SGU costume route. The show is starting to pick up a little though I found the first half of season 1 to be a little "meh".
I do think that the uniforms look awesome though and that alone has me tempted to make one, I look at the black ripstop in Spotlight everytime I'm there and think about it. Probably not until next year though since my costume queue is already too big and I want to make a desert offworld SG-1 costume first.

I have however, already scored myself a pair of Wiley-X XL-1 Sunglasses which are what they use on the show. A run was done at a discount price over on scifihero.net late last year and I wear them as my everyday sunglasses so I have those already if i do an SGU set up.

Here's a pic for those wondering what I'm talking about:

Update time- Jacket is pretty much finished, awaiting nametapes (above right pocket), rank stripes (for the collar) and the command badge (above left pocket) before I hem the bottom.

I have been trolling through pics I can find online and definately have found a pleat on the back of hers as well.

and there looks like front seams (much like the females) along the front of the male uniform top, making it much easier to put the pockets in!
phew.

I have finished up the patterning. Just need to do the sleeve pocket now. Have the press studs (from Lincraft) and the zip (though I could not find a 2-way zip locally) Did anyone else do the 2-way jacket zip?
I am having fun with the pleats in the back but think I have nutted it out. I will be making a toile of mine (as it is more fitted and I am ... um... not as thin as the TV characters).. hmmm...
anyhoo, thought it best to check the fit first. D's should be easy as the men's is not so fitted.
Awaiting the rest of the patches which are apparently posted now.

HOpe I will make the deadline.

I found one black two-way zip at Spotlight in the city, but it was way too short. I asked about other lengths, but well... it was Spotlight. wink.gif
So I didn't bother. There's probably going to be lots of little things I've left off of mine I'm sure.

Can't wait to see yours Kat.

zips! I hate sewing zips. I have finished mine and have to do a front zip and two invisible zips for D...
Did I mention how much I hate sewing zips (possibly another reason to do renaissance costuming. Handmade eyelets are soooo less stressful).
