YES, IT'S ON AGAIN!

Saturday 28 August 2010
7:30pm – 12:00am

North Adelaide Community Centre
176 Tynte Street, North Adelaide
(behind the North Adelaide library)

COSTUME IS REQUIRED! smile.gif

This is your chance to be in a whole room full of other people in costume - and all costume styles are welcome: TV or film reproductions; Historical; Science Fiction or Fantasy creations; Fursuits; Superheroes; Lolita; anime and cartoon characters; Goths; Zombies; Military (historical or futuristic) – or anything else you can thing of. You don't even need to have made your costume - if your time or your skills are limited you could borrow a costume, have someone else make your costume, or even hire one. You only need to have made your own costume if you wish to enter the competitions (which are only open to Guild Members - but you can always join up!)

Interstate visitors are always welcome, and if you don't know anyone here you can bunk with for the weekend, previous attendees have stayed at (and can recommend) the Quality Hotel Old Adelaide, 160 O'Connell Street North Adelaide, which is literally just down the road (in walking distance). If you can make it down for a few days extra, we'll be happy to show you around our favourite (fabric) shops, so make sure you have a bit extra room in your suitcase smile.gif

Tickets are on sale now - from me, and I hope to get tickets out to our 3(!) sale points by the end of this month - Red Ruby Vintage in Peel St, City; Owls Bookshop at 125 Archer St, Nth Adel; and Kool4Kats, Shop 3/231 Unley Road, Malvern. Members will also find a booking form enclosed/attached with their newsletter. I'll also be selling them at the next Meetup.

Ticket prices go up the closer it gets to the event....

$25 Guild members, $40 non-members, up to 30 June.
$30 Guild members, $45 non-members, up to 31 July .
$35 Guild members, $50 non-members, up to 25 August.
And booking close on 26 August.
There will be no tickets sold at the door - you must pre-buy your tickets!

Please note: a Light Supper is provided (around 10pm) so it would be a good idea to have dinner before you arrive, and there is a cash bar. So no BYO, or we get into trouble with our limited licence.

Now, if you do want enter the competitions, you need to register with us. We have forms for you to fill out which will tell you everthing you need to know. And if you're not already a member, we'll send you a membship form as well (as only Guild members can compete).

There are two competitions you can enter - the Parade, where you get to show off your costume on stage. This competition is about presentation as well as the actual costume.
The other competition is Workmanship. This is if you don't want to have to face the crowd from the stage, and it is where the judge gets to see the inside of your costume. It's a one-on-one time with the judge where you get to show off your costume just to them, and talk about how you made it, why you made it, any research you did, and how you solved any problems you had.

And if you're just starting out in costuming, never fear, you won't be judged against the Masters. We have a section just for you, under Novices, and another for 'journeymen' - those who aren't really beginners, but aren't yet good enough to be considered a Master. We've even had a novice take out "Best in Show".

But you don't have to compete, you can just come along and hang out with a bunch of other people whose passion is costuming!

See you there?

I was contemplating it but not sure.

Where can I find the rules for the parade and competitions?

If you go to the Downloads section, the rules are in the Ball page. The 2010 information hasn't been put up there yet, but parade and competition entry rules should remain much the same.

I'm thinking about entering the Parade but not sure atm.

As a complete Noob to the Costume Ball competitions blink.gif , I have some questions...For entry into the comps, do you have to have made all elements for your costume totally from scratch (eg. jewellry, trousers etc), or is some 'assembly' permitted (using own imagination) as well as some total construction from scratch (I hope that makes sense! huh.gif ) I'm trying to find out what is considered 'making your own costume.' smile.gif

And...is there an extra entry fee (as well as general admittance) for entry into the competitions?

Serpentia: Generally to enter the comp you need to have made 90-95% of your costume. You're not really expected to make shoes for example. There's no extra fee to enter, you just need to be a financial member of the Guild and buy a ticket, of course wink.gif

Actually the tickets are silver coloured this year, lol!

The Parade competition:
Yes, you need to make most of your own costume. As Ben said we don't expect you to make your shoes, though can if you want to, of course. smile.gif Essentially, you need to have made what we can see of your costume. For example if you're doing a Victorian era dress, you need to have made the actual dress, and you'll get extra brownie point if you've made your underwear too, but you don't have to have made your chemise, drawers, corset and petticoats yourself because we can't see the actual garments - unless you show them as part of your parade. An example for the blokes, taking a similar Victorian example: the pants, a high buttoning vest and coat would need to be made by you, but you could buy the shirt, hat & shoes, though again, you'll get better marks if you've done them yourself too.

You get extra points too, if you give the judges some reference material (including letting them know which bits of your costume are made by you). This can be folder with full dress-diary type documentation, or simply a reference picture of what you've made - especially if it's an obscure character, or an obscure movie you've take it from. Remember the judges may not be a fan of the genre you're costuming from. This also applies to the Workmanship competition.

Now for the Workmanship competition, you do have to have made all the costume you are showing to the judge. The advantage here is you don't have to show -all- of your costume (just a major part of it). For example, Padme's dress, but not necessarily her headgear as well. We do encourage people to enter the Workmanship comp as well - it's where you actually get to talk to the judge about what you done, and why you've done it. This is a better compt to enter if you have done any applied decoration, or have fine detail on your costume, as these particulars are rarely seen from the stage.

And a reminder we have three sections for you to compete in. Serpentia, you would be only be competing against other Novices, the Journeymen and Masters have their own competitions.

A Novice is someone who hasn't been sewing (or contructing) costumes very long. You won't have earnt money through costuming and you won't be a past or current student at a tertiary level sewing/costume course.
A Master is someone who has probably been sewing for more than 5 years, they've most likley been paid for costumes they've done, and/or undertaken further education in a costume related field.
Jouneymen are those of you are beyond beginner, but not yet up to a Master standard.

These are not concrete definitions and if you've not entered before, you can discuss it with us and we'll workout on the day the most appropriate section for you to be in.

These rules of couse only apply to the competitions. A general entry ticket to the ball means you can be in purchased, hired, constructed or entirely handmade costumes. You just need to wear a costume (any costume!) to come along.

Hope that helps, and if anyone else has questions about the Ball, or needs more clarification about the above, feel free to post here.

Thanks for that El-Presidente, that has helped. biggrin.gif

On that subject, another more mundane question...If we enter into the competitions, is there a 'dress rehearsal'/run through, we are required to attend before the event? If so, how far in advance is the rehearsal to the event? (Some of us have a bit of a drive and would prefer not to be exhausted before the event unsure.gif ) smile.gif

The parade rehearsal is in the afternoon prior to the event. Not too sure of the exact time, but I'm leaning to around 3pm?

El Presidente, shall you be at the Costume Quiz Game Night, and if so, shall you be selling tickets there?

I just realised, I should certainly attend this year's ACG ball, and thus I should most definitely get my ticket before they go up $5 (because I'm cheap like that biggrin.gif).

Edited by Maceo, 02 June 2010 - 04:47 PM.

Go ahead, make my coffee.

Now I know what you're thinking - "does he want two sugars or only one?" Well to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I've kind of lost track myself.
But being that I don't like my coffee too strong or too sweet, you’ve got to ask yourself one question – "do you feel lucky" – well do you, punk?

Yes Maceo, I'll be at the Costume Quiz Game Night, so if anyone else wants to get tickets there as well, they can.

Tickets are now available in our three retail outlets:
Red Ruby Vintage in Peel St, City;
Owls Bookshop at 125 Archer St, Nth Adel; and
Kool4Kats, Shop 2/23 Unley Road, Malvern.

Because we realised the next newsletter comes out after the nect price rise, I'll be emailing out a form you can fill in and send back - as long as it's postmarked before the end of this month, you'll get the cheapest price. Keep an eye out in your inboxes in the next couple of days.
