I have been contacted by the Earthly Delights Historical Dance Academy (these are the people who run the Jane Austen Festival) based in Canberra to see if we would be interested in them coming over and teaching some Historical Dance, Music and/or Sewing workshops in 2011.

I've said a tentative YES! but I would like to have an indication of interest before I take this up further with them.

The simplest event we could organise is Regency or Victorian era dance workshop(s) during the day, with a Ball/dance in the evening. This is something would almost certainly interest some in the Victoriana Society as well. Now we could keep this just between the two groups, or we could look at opening this up to the general public (either will need to have a hall hired for the dance/ball, but we could do a basket supper for a private event, and we'd need professional caterers for a public event).

But we could also lengthen this event to take in the Sunday with more workshops (dance/sewing) and/or even start with some workshops (or a movie night?) on the Friday night.

If we were to charge more per ticket, we could look at a function venue that would supply workshop space and a dinner before the ball/dance (though we'd need to ask for a bigger dance area than the standand 3m x 3m, lol!)

As far as themes go...
Regency: We could have our own mini Jane Austen Festival!
Victorian: This covers a fair time frame - Maybe a Charles Dickens event (he wrote from the 1830's to the 1860's),
Though later in the century especially, it was a time of "Science, Technology and Invention" in Australia, which could tie in very well with a more (Victorian) Steampunk based event, though the Ball/dance would still be Victorian themed.
Or perhaps something more Edwardian, The Golden Age / Belle Époque.

So 1) do people think this a workable event, and what length of event would be your preference,

2) which theme do you want to go with,

and 3) are you willing to help with the organising, or to run a workshop in any of the themes smile.gif

Me, me! Regency!!! biggrin.gif

Depending when it is, of course, but I can help. Victorian would be okay too, but personally I don't think as late as Edwardian.

Sounds great. Yes to any of the above for me, as well as helping out if it is during the warmer months.

I'd be interested in it if it were Steampunk as that's more me...Victoriana meets sci-fi with less P&Qs ;-)....(LOL Yoyoydyne!)

Getting this back on topic and away from brains ;-)

Just letting you know this event may be on hold until 2012 - as it seems they're saving (money & leave time) to head overseas in September next year. Will keep you posted...

However .... all is not lost, The Olympia will be flying again in the fringe, The events of the maiden flight will be taken into account and the event is set two years hence. The Royal attributes of the evening are no longer a fine diplomatic function but a working vessel, so Costumes can be designed to be a little less elegant and much more practical. There will be three nights, Friday , saturday and Sunday on the one weekend. A limit of 60 places per night. We will keep you posted on future developments.

There is talk that this event is back on the cards for May next year. When something concrete is in place, El Presidente will tell us the details.

Just a quick update. Merrick is right that we are now looking at a date in May (maybe 2nd weekend?) so this is now looking to be a Regency themed event, as the Colonial Ball (1850's era) is usually on the first weekend in June, and we don't want to have two similar (ie. Victorian) events close together.

Regency also has the advantage that it's not so reliant on male-female couples dances that later in the Victorian period is.

Oh, and we are currently negotiating live musicians!

Ooh Regency would be awesome! (I already have a dress!) I'd be able to help set up/organise, as long as I don't have work that weekend (and even then I can usually get out of it if I give enought notice).

Sorry everybody, it's not going to happen this year.

Unfortunately John has not been able to get the time off work to come here this year :( Looks like he's used up all his holidays going overseas! (Hmm, Adelaide or Europe - tough call that, lol!)

But they have promised to come over in 2012. So keep an eye out for an announcement for a Ball around May/June next year...
