Planning on doing Re-l Mayer form Ergo Proxy for Armageddon.

I found a link to making the gun but its entirely out of wood.

I was wondering how much wood can I use to make the gun but still be deemed safe to take to the convention??

I'm not familiar enough with that show but after a quick search it's still a little difficult to get a decent scale for the size of the gun as I think that may be a factor.

I'm also no familiar enough with other conventions' weapons policies (having only ever attended two AVCons). So how strict are they when it comes to weapons made of wood? (AVCon's rule of thumb was, if you can swing and hit someone with it and hurt them then you need to store it. This covered lightsabers).

You might be able to get away with making large parts of it out of balsa wood and the smaller bits in MDF?

Another idea would be to make it out of wood, create a mould and then cast a copy in a softer maybe more flexible substance or even slush cast a hollow shelled prop (covering the walls of the mould and not filling it all up like I've done in the past).
