Ok... I'm still making the sculpt base, but I think I really need to get this sorted out so that I can adjust the sculpt before vacforming if I need to.
I'm asking this in several spots, so apologies if you start to see this on multiple forums. I've read everything I could over on fursuit.org, but I am just a bit stuck
At the moment this is related to the construction of a kigurumi mask. (construction pics are here)
Constructing the eyes seem very similar to techniques used by fursuiters, however not exactly the same. The only instructions I can find for this type are in Japanese and hence no help to me.
Ok... the guts of my question.
What I am making is something like this. You will see the eyes are cartoon like, but there is a gradient colour for the iris.
I have two options at the moment and a few questions (so any help would be greatly appreciated)
1. Printed mylar.
I am not sure exactly what is involved with this technique or if it would be appropriate. If anyone knows more please let me know so that I can better decide.
2. Seethrough plastic
Using a Rit dye wash on a plastic base (probably perspex safety glasses) to try to get the desired effect. Another option was a suggestion by Zwabbe to use the coloured stainglass beads, but it sounds a bit messy.
3. Printed base with only the very centre iris done in black stocking or bridal tulle.
Questions for option 3 (reference here and here)
Do the two links just above show that the kigurumi maker in question is only making the vision hole the pupil? If so I believe they airbruse the eye, so I could do it with an accurate print out.
What do you think is the recommended size to see out of. Would the pupil be enough to see out of?
Any tips for the sculpt stage to ensure that my eyes would actually line up with that?
Any other techniques you think would work with this type of mask?
Thankyou for your help!

Mmm my babel fish doesn't really like japanese but
"How to draw the eye
# 1 Obtaining - with, something being intoxicated, because random thing the air which you said does, method of drawing the eye in my case (you draw directly in the mask and it is packed) are.
- from those which sort are always prepared first The left: The paper pattern printout those which are written on the size of the eye which is drawn with the personal computer. This does being something which was really used in the production of FS-1. ('A`) Is new draws the person where the マンドクセ ・ ・ ・ hand drawing is proud thinks that it is good even with the hand drawing. Pasting the both sides tape on reverse side, you use. The circle Sawayama is drawn under square, but as for this whether size about of some pupil is good those which are tested just remain being, please do not make the air. The right: The paper pattern is cut and the tape which was pasted on the work space craft tape which is pulled out making use of the character that, adhesion does not fall, the magazine which does not need pasting the craft tape in something, does the clipping of the paper pattern which pasted the both sides tape on the reverse side."
It looks like they're using multiple paper masks to get the colour gradient and highlights, the paint looks fairly opaque so I think the vision would be restricted to the pupils(but they're quite large).
A full sized printout looks like a good option to me,either as a means to make the eye or as a pattern for a painted lens.Depending on how much black there is on the eye you might be able to have all the black areas as vision holes.
I'm thinking a decoupage technique might work, stick the eye image to the front of a clear lens, cut out all the black bits and then gloss coat to even out the level and give a wet look.
"Any tips for the sculpt stage to ensure that my eyes would actually line up with that?"
You are kind of bound by the characters head shape when placing the eyes in the sculpt but measuring the distance between your pupils and marking that on the head(even roughly drawing in the eyes with a texta as you work to keep things lined up and in proportion)Worst case, you may have to turn your head a little and look out of one pupil at a time.

Ok. As always you've convinced me to keep going. I just hope I don't have to hold the head with my hands to see out of it enough to walk around. I guess the position of my head inside can be changed with some carefully placed foam padding and I can look at eye styles to pick one with the most black for seeing through.
I will have a look at the placement of the eyes so far. Since it is kind of humanoid I am hoping there isn't much difference between it and me since I used a glass head as a base and its proportions were very close to mine.
The Fantesca and Depas masks both look like the only part that is cut out of the head cast is the actual pupil. But I do have one mask that seems to have had the whole eye cut out. Its hard to know what to do.
I just have to sculpt ears and mouth detail then sand it all and I think the sculpt is just about done.
