I recently purchased Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and I suddenly got tempted to cosplay as a Fire Emblem character seems I haven't cosplayed as a videogame character yet. I haven't got around to playing the game so I'm not sure if I'll end up cosplaying as Ike (the main character) but most of the characters have similar clothing. I was just wondering what kinds of fabrics would be best for this costume and if anyone had some hint on how I could do the armour?

Yes they do and there's plenty of characters (and games in the series). The gameplay is also addictive.

Cool!!!! I just went and did some research and I have fallen in love with some of the costumes already! Talk about something for everyone!

I like a lot of them, but I think my faves are:

I'm looking for a costume to make for the Saturday of AVCon so maybe I could do one of them wink.gif

To answer your question, there are some fantastic tutorials here: http://amethyst-angel.com/armormaking.html

Damn... I wasn't going to do my Fire Emblem cosplay that soon. It would be cool to have a big group. My sister is tempted to cosplay as Mist if I cosplay as Ike.

hmmmm.... I would say play the game a little bit first just so you can get a feel for the character.

My reason is because I could suggest you use a plain cotton twill for the white pants... but then if the character is a wealthy prince, maybe those pants would be a smashing white suede. So knowing the character does help in choosing fabrics because you know what kind of fabrics they WOULD wear.

That said. I would probably use pleather for the leg guards because they are supposed to protect... why fabric? White drill cotton for the pants would be good because it would be firm enough to get that tight and give those nice firm creases around the knee. Something like a light-weight cotton or substitute for the moroon shirt under his blue one to keep heat and cost down.

I was thinking that if it wasn't going to be worn in heavy heat that *maybe* consider using a thermal-backed curtain fabric for the cloak... that way it would have the one side coloured and the other side white like in the picture *but* you'd want to make sure it wasn't too heavy to give a nice drape and you weren't going to die of heat exhaustion.

Head-scarf needs to be something light-weight. (suggestions?)

For the blue and gold shirt... errr... well... I tend to be overly fond of using drill cotton and it's close cousins so I'm not overly creative on bringing nice textures together. I'd suggest seeing what is available in that colour for a start smile.gif

Please, for the love of all that's good and holy, please don't choose shiny fabrics. That is all.

Thanks for the help... I found a great drape fabric in Spotlight last week for the cape.

I was thinking either a denim or drill for the blue part of the shirt and I was thinking of a shiny fabric for the gold part but I'll look around for alternatives first.

I'd like to start making the costume with the gloves first. What should I use for those and does anyone know some patterns I can use to make them?

They're fingerless gloves and Starfirephoenix told me that with them you don't need any gussets so you should be able to draw around your hand and come up with a pattern from that. I wonder if you could make the "metal" part using the bucket armour technique or are you going to try that amythest method?

For the yellow I would personally be tempted to use a similar material to your blue. Mostly because the picture isn't overly shiny or reflective and if the material types and weaves contrast too much it might look a little strange. For example a shiny satin might not look as good with a matt cotton. You can always ask for fabric swatches so you can hold the materials together and see what you think though.

I finally got around to actually playing the game. I'm still set on cosplaying as Ike. He's a mercenary's son, so he would be wearing decent fabrics but not anything too flashy. I think I'll go with the denim and drill. I'd like to make the gloves out of leather or something similar but I have no experience in using the stuff. Also does anyone know of some online guides on making the gloves or knows where I can get instructions? I was going to use the amethyst method to make the metal parts. I still have to hunt down the polystyrene sheeting though.

We got some styrene sheet from Junction Models on Main North road. There are varying thicknesses but the size is smaller than A4 for around $7-9.

I've just had a go at gloves myself. I was using cotton and I've found that if I do it reasonably close I can't get my fingers in, but as I give more area to my fingers it is making the hand part too loose and the gap between the fingers non existant (more like mittens with a stitch between the fingers)... so I am starting to think gussets are required.... or I'm doing it wrong.

Hmmm... further suggestions would be good.

Im thinking of doing a cosplay of this character from one of the Fire Emblems.

Any suggestions on how I would go about making it?

Lots of things look similar to the one I'm doing so I should be able to help you when I'm making mine...

I have to convince you to do a Path of Radiance one!

Good luck prying it away from me!

I'll keep an eye out for another copy but the game's not cheap.

How about Zihark... I just got him in my game... He looks similar to the one you posted:

Atory... the gloves issue.

I've tried with starfires pattern and making my own and so far I would say making my own is working out easier. blink.gif

I ended up biting the bullet and getting some more cotton lycra. It is around $14/m for seaplay lycra at spotlight, or around $18-22/m for very good quality cotton lycra at DK Fabrics which is the stuff in the photo.

I made a pattern by putting my hand on paper and drawing around it. Then cut a basic shape out of the cottonlycra and drew around the paper pattern with chalk where I wanted the stitching. I didn't leave any extra allowance, but you can see that it is fitting my hand ok. I'm going to be trying to put some facing around the wrist of mine to give it a slight stiff flair which is I think what you are going for too. That way it stretches in the fingers and won't where there isnt tenshion (theoretically)

Cotton really doesn't work... but have a go with lycra. You will need to use a small zigzag or a specific stitch for stretchy fabrics though because a straight stitch will most likely break when you try to put the glove on.

That has really worked out nicely... It looks like that would work great for Takeo's gloves (all the characters he's thinking of doing pretty much have them) however I'd have to go with something thicker. I was thinking of trying to find some cheap second-hand motorbike gloves as they look really similar to Ike's and then cut off the fingers. I'm still going to use the foam technique for the armoured parts on the gloves rather than vacforming them.

Cool. Well if that helps its great. I can see us at AVCon now looking over each others gloves to the amusement of everyone else. smile.gif

I won't be wearing gloves at AVCon... I don't actually have a specific date or event for this costume... its just experimentation.
