For Supanova I'm making a Wonder Woman costume to wear for the Sunday. I'm basing mine on the current artwork for Wonder Woman

I've hit a few bumps along the way. Firstly the pattern I originally bought didn't work (for a few reasons). So that put me off a bit. I finally got around to doing a second mock-up (using a different pattern) and it's working really well. I'm quite pleased with the look. I've uploaded pics to my Photobucket account, so you can see the various mock-ups I've done.

But I've got a bit of a dilemma with the back closure of the bodice. Originally I was going to have an invisible open zipper at the back (which I had success with on my Padme corset). However, due to the style of the bodice, it needs to be quite tight, sot hat I don't have any Janet JAcksonesque costume malfunctions! I'm a little worried that if I lose any weight before Nova (which is a probability) then it won't be as tight. So I was considering making it lace up at the back (to allow for any fluctuations in weight). I had intended for it to be boned anyway, which I think will actually take it in tighter. I had thought that if I went with the lacing at the back, I might still put in a zip at the side, to make it easy to get in and out (and I would put a modesty panel across the back).

So what are people's thoughts?

My next difficulty is with the boots. I'm on a bit of a tight budget, and have been having trouble finding red boots for less than about $40. So I was trying to think of alternatives for how to tackle the boots. In the reference image I'm going from, it actually looks like she has wedge heeled platformish boots. I was thinking of looking for a pair of shoes with a similar (or approriate) sole, and then creating the upper out of lycra, possibly with leather or vinyl white accent parts. I'd put a zip up the back, but would need to make sure they fit tightly and don't fall down (maybe cable ties on each side of the zip?). My main issue is that I don't want them to look really dodgey! So any hints or advice or help would be greatly appreciated!! biggrin.gif

I'm going to work on the pants tonight. I bought a pair of those control briefs which fit really nicely (and help give me more of that Wonder Woman shape wink.gif), and I'm going to cover them with some white star printed navy lycra. I'm going to first do a bit of a mock-up with some lighter blue lycra that I bought, and then put the navy lycra over the top of that (assuming it works) as the back of the briefs especially is a little thin. I'd like to feel like I'm wearing a little more than jsut underwear. I have 2 pairs anywho (they came in a 2 pack!) so I can always use the second pair if I stuff them up. I'm jsut going to wing it, and cut out a square of the lycra and pin and stitch (with seams at the sides) so hopefully it should work. biggrin.gif I'll post pics when done!

Dude when I made my Wonder Woman red boots with white stripes I got that boot paint from shoe stores and painted a brown pair I got from a second hand store. Then I used masking tape to tape up a stencil to paint the white bits in by hand - they worked okay for being on a budget. I was doing the Linda Carter TV version. I'll se if I can rustle up some photos for you

I was hoping you would post!!! Heheh good to have advice from someone who has made it!! biggrin.gif

I went opshopping today, and actually couldn't find any knee high boots of any colour sad.gif Buuut, I'm currently watching an auction on Ebay for a really really perfect pair of black boots (they have a really similar heel to the ref piccy I'm going from) and I was thinking I should be able to paint them somehow. Now I know that it will work!! biggrin.gif I figure so long as it works for the day, I can always do touch ups if I wear it again! Hopefully I'll wint he auction (I'll know in a few hours!). Then I shall be visiting the shoe place! biggrin.gif Thank you so much!! biggrin.gif Pics would be great!! I've found Lynda Carter's costume a great reference too, since the pic I'm working from is a comic, so it's great to get ideas from something that's actually be made!

Abi, Jo's boots are really good as is the rest of her Wonderwoman costume! I was surprised to discover they were painted, they looked that good!

Your new mock up is looking great smile.gif I think lacing might be a better option. Good luck and keep us posted! smile.gif

Thanks Alison! Hoping I win these boots! They're perfect! biggrin.gif And yes, I'm definitely thinking lacing.

Actually Kelly, when I saw that I'd thought that painting might be an alright idea, which Jo has confirmed for me! biggrin.gif yay!

Okies, so I won the boots I was hoping for! And all up (including express postage) only $30.50, so I'm very happy!

These are the boots biggrin.gif I really like the heel, they look very similar to the ones in the ref pic! So once I have them, I shall go down to the shoe place and get some paint stuff. Very excited now!!

I decided to get a Kwik-sew swimsuit pattern for the pants after struggling with these other ones. Hoping to get the base of it all done tomorrow, so I can move onto the exciting stuff! biggrin.gif Hopefully!

Alrighty, some progress to report (alas no pics yet):

The Satin top layer is all sewn together. The bodice lining is all sewn and the boning chanels sewn on (I didn't want any stitching showing through to the top layer). I jsut need a bit of help (when my mum gets backf rom work) to check where my eyelets are going at the back (I don't want too much of a gap at the back). So once I know how much to take off the back, I'll stitch the satin and lining together along the top and back, stick in the boning, and then use binding to close the bottom. I might take a little bit off bottom of the front, I don't want it showing under the belt. I'm going to get some proper gold eyelets from a leather/riding store. I'm considering seeing if I can find some gold lacing, but I'll probably go with red.

I'm so proud of this bodice; I took it really slowly and made sure all my seam allowances were exact. So this is my first boned item (corset or vest) that fully matches up! biggrin.gif I'm using boning casing for it, so it wasn't a big deal, but still!! It matches!! biggrin.gif

I'm working on the pants at the moment, they're so much easier than I thought! I did a couple of mock-ups with some pale blue lycra I got on sale from spotlight for $1m and tweaked the pattern a little so they weren't quite as high cut in the leg. They look absolutely fantastic (if I do say so myself!). I was a little worried how they would look, but with the patterns fabric, they really do look the part. I'm very happy with how they turned out; they look quite a lot like Lynda Carter's! (though mine are stretchy, hers were satin tongue.gif). They're also really comfortable! They're more like little shorts than briefs, so hopefully with the tights underneath, I shalln't feel self-conscious! Can't wait to take photos of the whole lot togehter! biggrin.gif

Thanks Alison! I finally have a few pics to show! biggrin.gif Been very busy today! biggrin.gif

The first pic shows the experiments I did with the rope for my Lasso. I know it's been described as sometimes glowing like fire, so I wanted to give it this kind of appearance. I felt that just the gold wouldn't be enough, so the above shows: just gold; gold over yellow base; gold over tan base; gold over orange base. I did also do gold over red, but I lost the piece sad.gif I'm probably going to go with the orange though, it really gives the gold depth.

The second pic is a quick shot of the pants and top together. I'm going to hand stitch the hem on the pant legs as I didn't want the zig-zag stitching to show on the outside. I'm very happy with how they turned out, they look excellent on! biggrin.gif

The third picture shows the back. I'm having a bit of a dilemma with this. My mum helped me this arvo to do a bit of a trial fit, to check where I was going to put the back seam. Originally, when we tried it, I had about a 1 inch gap in the back. I thought this was a reasonable enough gap to allow for a little bit of fluctuation. However, I sewed it all together, and put the back boning in, and when mum and I tried it again, there's about a 2 inch gap now. I'm sure that the seam and boning won't have eaten an inch of fabric. So I'm actually wondering if it's because of allt he water I've been drinking today (gah so hot!!). So I'm wondering - those who know more about corsets than I do!! - is this too much of a gap to have int he back? I'm going to put a modesty panel in anyway, but I wasn't sure if too big a gap would lessen the integrity of the corset. I'm not going to do anything with it for a couple of days, and try again when it's a little cooler, to see if the gap has lessened.

Apart from that, I'm really happy with it all! So all that's left to do is put binding on the bottom and put the eyelets in. So now I can start working on the accessories!

Abi, if you are worries about the gap in the back of the bodice, then all you need to make is what we call a modesty panel. Many corsets need them because most do not close all the way in the back. It's essentially a rectangular piece, lined, of the same material your bodice is made of. You can have it loose and have someone slip it in the back of the bodice as you are being laced in or you can hand stitch on long edge in place. It should stay in place as you lace up and hide the gap for you. Also, the red panel underneath will allow you to have the gold lacing, if you wish, and it will show up really well. biggrin.gif

Thanks Rena! biggrin.gif Great minds think alike biggrin.gif When I decided to make it lace up rather than using a zip, I realised I would need a modesty panel. I think it just really makes it look alot more professional than if there was a patch of bare skin. Though I wasn't sure how big my gap would be at the time, otherwise I would have sewn it into the lining seam. I'll probably just handstitch it in. Plus, the top of my pants needs to sit high enough so that skin won't show between the corset and pants when I lift my arms up. If I didn't put the modesty panel in, you'd see that at the back.

But definately, that will show up the gold lacing really well!
