I got myself a working vintage Werthiem treadle sewing machine yesterday.

It runs on treadle and hand power and its quite groovy - this means a step up from hand sewing and a machine that sews quietly and fast and doesn't need electricity!

Has anyone out there had much experience with these machines?

Everything seems to be running smoothly with it - going to give it a good oiling and clean over and use it to make a costume once I have figured it all out. It didn't come with a manual unfortunately but it seems pretty straight forward

How lovely, I used to have a working treadle, though I never used it & sold it when I moved to 'stralia. I was going to get my mother to teach me how to use it as that's what she'd used as a teenager. Sadly I never got a lesson cos she moved to another city, I moved overseas and never got around to it. I still miss the treadle (not a singer).

The first machine I ever used was a Singer treddle powered machine. My parents have two of the buggers and I've seen several others for sale. They seem to be common, but very robust.

I'm hopefully inheriting my Grandma's treddle machine biggrin.gif It's been in the family for quite some time! I'd be interested in how it goes!

I have my grandmothers old Singer, but I haven't used it yet. It's probably in need of a service, and a few bits and pieces have gone missing, but I have no idea where to take it!

well everything seems to be working yet I can't get the thread to do what it's supposed to do and I am wondering if I have just threaded the machine incorrectly - the hassel of not having a manual. Any ideas?

Sewing machines all thread basically the same way, there's some pretty good general instruction here http://sewing.about.com/c/ht/00/07/How_Thr...e0962932900.htm
And SewUSA has some 'free threading diagrams' - they don't have Wertheim specifically, but look for old Singer or White machines and see if there's something similar. http://www.sewusa.com/Sewing_Machine_Threading_Diagrams.htm

We took our old machines to Treadles & Treasures (Rob and Lynne Sanders) rlsand@bigpond.com - they're over Henley Beach way (contact me privately if you want their phone numbers)

I've got my grandmothers 'White' (a treadle), and my mums 'Singer' (has a knee lever rather than a foot pedal)

I have never used it myself, but my mum showed me how to use it. It is one of the originals in mint condition (As far as Vintage stuff goes)

I've always wanted a tredle machine, and would love to hear how you go with it.

I actually saw a shiney looking one in the window of an antique store today... hopefully next week we'll go when they're open and I can see how much it is.
