So I went to Spotlight and Lincraft today in search of the largest Bells they stock.

Lincraft had some 50mm ones, but in the wrong colour. I checked the rack and they're supposed to have them, so I take some examples and ask the girl if they can order the size and style I want... she says "sorry we don't order stuff for anyone, the warehouse just sends us things"

So I go to Spotlight armed with brands and sizes. I get told there "yes we can order stuff, but it has to be something we'd regularly have on the shelves so even though we could order that it isn't something we regularly order so we can't".... huh??

So now I've looked online and found that the same brand is also stocked through bi-lo, k-mart and go-lo so I'm going to check those places too.

Lincraft has really gone downhill lately.

large bells?
*hmmm*
I saw some large bells around here, where was it I wonder...

hmm

is there a christmas shop in Adelaide ... there are a couple of permanent ones in Sydney. I've never been to either so don't know what their year round stock is.

They need to be the round sort unfortunately and plain. The ones they did have in stock at Lincraft were 2" with star decorations. Maybe worth a try though.

I might have to make them out of plastic or foam... but I really wanted the jingly sound if possible and I didn't want them to look too fake.

Shi which ones are you thinking of??

d'oh, these aren't round & plain

if you have to make your own, you could use a decoupage ball and cut from it the shape right at the bottm for the bell opening. My cunning plan would be to put a couple of the round bells inside so that it jingles the way round bells do.

yes that is a good idea. I wonder if my skills are good enough to make them well. Do you know if spotlight or lincraft stock them or if they are only seasonal? I suppose I could order them if need be from that mrcraft.com place they list - $7.50 postage, ouch!

I haven't seen them, but then again I don't look at the decoupage stuff. I'd hate to suggest ordering them from overseas when there must be something similar here. Maybe a small hollow plastic child's ball cutting the slit for the bell, inserting real tinkly ones, and painted gold, or silver or bronze???

I ended up finding decoupage balls at a local craft store. So amazing spotlight and lincraft doesn't stock them. I'm going to see if a dremel will cut the slits well. The bells I have sound alright inside, but muffled cause there isn't a hole in the plastic yet.

yah, that's brilliant :-) I mightn't have a creative streak for original costume ideas, but the yokel in me can come up with ways to make stuff, especially if I let the subconscious think it over for a few days.

They were only $1.75 so if I break one trying to cut the hole then it doesn't really matter!! So yeah your idea really helped wenz smile.gif

you could try putting tape across where you're cutting, that might help support the bits you don't want cracking while you cut.

I have a digicharat group for avcon consisting of dejiko, rabi en rose and puchiko for probably the friday night at avcon. And if it is really nice and I can afford it I might bring her to manifest too. A piyoko for some photos would be cool too. Thats the one to the right in your sig image isn't it?

I started cutting the bells last night, but they'll have to wait till I get back from sydney now. I'm cutting slits with a dremel, then doing the fine detailing with a jewellers saw. I'll take lots of pics so everyone can see.
