Yesterday i got given 2 old sabers. Judging from their form, I'd say replicas, but its still awesome having a new type of sword. Gotta clean them up a bit, but hoping to put them on my wall with maybe a shield.

I'll try and get some pics up soon.

I'm not sure why this was moved - he's not referring to light sabers but rather swords.

Ok, sorry the pics took so long, still not great but they will do. (are about 300Kb each)

http://www.ddd.furtopia.org/pics/MedievalP...nd%20Rapier.jpg

http://www.ddd.furtopia.org/pics/MedievalP...h%20Rapiers.jpg

I think i have made a mistake when classifying them. Saber just was the first appropriate thing that jumped into my head...But i think they may be rapiers. Not too sure on how they are classified, so i'll leave it up to any fans here to advise me on what they are.

Thanks,

They do look more rapier-ish. Isn't a sabre usually curved? Or am I thinking a scimitar? I dunno, I needs coffee x__x

Sabers usually have a slight curve to them, but it depends on the blade. A saber is also usually a single edge, perhaps with a false edge for only part of the back side.

Second one is definately a rapier. First one I don't know, but it looks more like a display only blade. Regardless I wouldn't use either for combat. Without seeing either in person it is hard to say whether they're cheap chinese blades or something worth a little more. Regardless it is doubtful either are that old.

Nice to look at though happy.gif I like the look of the second one.

Definitely not for combat. They are quite poorly made (a tad wobbly at the hilt). Plus the blades are covered in fine carvings, and i would not want to lose them!. If anything i will display them on a wall crossed with a shield over them!

The first one is a 'side sword'. They became popular in the early renaissance and were very good at dealing with the mix of armoured and unarmoured opponents your average renaissance man would inevitably have to deal with. However having said that yours appears to be a late one from after the time when rapiers started coming into fashion. Yours appears to be from a brief era when Rapier/side sword hybrids became common. The furniture (handle, Quillions and pommel) are of a side sword design while the blade is more like that of a rapier, but just alittle shorter than you'd get on a true rapier.

The second sword is indeed a Rapier, in a style most common to Spain. The blades slightly too short (or your very tall) and the blade looks a bit to flimsy but it's not a bad copy. Rapiers evolved from Side swords because of a new fighting style that involved putting your index finger over the hilt to gain some extra point control, but that left your finger dangerously exposed to your opponents blade sliding down yours. The 'cup hilt' was developed to counter this but side swords and Raiers continued to co-exist for nearly a century before side swords disappear almost over night to be replaced be Sabres which were becoming popular because of there use by the Polish Hussar's but that's a whole other story!

Basically they both appear to be replica's of swords commonly found between the 16th and 17th century's in Europe.

Hope you find this useful and not to boring!
